Lomi Lomi is an ancient massage used by the people of Hawaii. Lomi Lomi massage has become well known internationally. Lomi Lomi is the Hawaiian word for “massage”, and it is part of a larger native Hawaiian tradition of healing and natural body care. Lomi lomi massage is not just about the relief of physical pain. In the application of the lomi lomi massage, the practitioner also seeks to bring calm into her client’s mind and to bring balance back into his or her spirit.
Massage therapy is a healing art that has been used for thousands of years. Massage is the manipulation of superficial and deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue to enhance the function and promote relaxation and well-being. Massage strokes are flowing and with total energy in long continuous no stress movements that assist in a letting go of old patterns that cause limitations.
Lomi Lomi is a healing art practiced by the native Hawaiians. For many years, Aunty Margaret taught her Hawaiian healing classes on her lanai: “the porch of her house which looks out across the ocean on the Big Island of Hawaii”. The traditional lomi lomi healing session began with mastering the hidden Self: a thorough investigation into the nature of the dysfunction, as well as prayer, fasting and several sessions in the steam hut.
Lomi Lomi Temple Style
Sacred Lomi and Pahi Lomi are both Hawaiian Temple Bodywork (flying dance meditation), a style taught around the world by Kahu Abraham Kawaii. Watch the “Basic-Lomi-Lomi-Run-on-Leg” video as an example.
While Lomi Lomi does relax the body and treat muscle pains just like traditional massage, it also establishes a deep connection between the massage therapist and the client. Specially when it is done while performing the flying dance meditation in a serene temple like surrouding, hence the “temple style”. Under body and full body strokes also help to free the energy, make the body soft, promoting free and abundant flow of life energy in the recipient.
Students will learn:
- All of the fundamental runs on the back and front of the body;
- the Seven Shamanic Principles (IKE, KALA, MAKIA ,MANAWA, ALOHA, MANA, PONO);
- conscious stretching;
- self care for the healer;
- shamanic movement (flying dance);
- exercises in presence (flying dance meditation), intimacy and self awareness;
- techniques for staying in balance while maintaining a service oriented life and career.
Performing the Hawaiian Lomi Lomi Massage in Templestyle gives the session an extra dimension of devotion to the Moment. And while you experience the strokes on you body, you feel yourself relax even deeper. Mastering the hidden Self while the masseur was trained and reliving that state while massaging, gives this type of Lomi Lomi a sense of a meditation in action.
Be aware learning more about lomi lomi by viewing video tapes does not provide the full essence and depth of lomi lomi healing, but can and should be viewed to get the picture beforehand.
